Lap band surgery or laparoscopic gastric banding procedure is a minimally invasive technique to aid in weight loss. The procedure involves a silicone band implant on the upper part of the stomach, creating a small pouch to control a patient’s food intake, appetite and digestion. It generally makes you feel full after just a small amount of food eaten and takes you a long time to get hungry again. Before you decide on having this procedure, consider first if lap band is right for you.
Lap Band may be for you if:
• You have a Body Mass Index (BMI) of at least 30 pounds, with 1 or more obesity related comorbid conditions
• You have excessive weight for more than 5 years.
• All your other attempts at weight loss have failed.
• You are above 18 years old.
• You do not suffer from a disease that causes obesity.
• You are not pregnant. If, after lap band surgery you get pregnant, you can easily have it deflated during pregnancy and then restore once you have stopped nursing.
• You do not drink excessive amounts of alcohol.
• You are committed to make lifestyle changes after lap band.
Lap Band is NOT be for you if:
• You suffer from inflammatory disease or gastrointestinal tract conditions.
• You have a lung or heart disease.
• You have problems that can cause bleeding in the stomach or esophagus.
• You have portal hypertension.
• You have congenital conditions in the stomach, esophagus or intestine.
• You have experienced intra-operative gastric injury at or near the intended location of the band.
• You have cirrhosis or chronic pancreatitis.
• You suffer from other illnesses that make you a poor prospect for surgery.
• You are pregnant.
• Your body cannot tolerate foreign objects.
• You are not committed to change your lifestyle and the challenges involved after the surgery.
While these considerations may guide you in your decision to undergo lap band operation, they are inconclusive. You should consult a physician or surgeon to fully assess your medical condition and decide from there if the procedure is right for you. Remember that all medical procedures involve complications and risks and you should consider them before you make a decision. Although lap band surgery is statistically the safest and the least invasive weight loss surgery, problems can occur.
